Charter Checklist

Basics

  1. How does the charter base work? (Phone Numbers, Access keys, gates, hours, etc.)
  2. How do all the boat systems work? (Engine, Electrical, Plumbing, Navigation, etc.)
  3. Confirm you have Diesel, Water, Propane, and an Empty holding tank.
  4. Confirm you have Drinking water and food.
  5. Confirm you have the needed housekeeping items. (Dishes, sheets, etc.)
  6. Confirm you have completed the chart briefing.
  7. What are the base emergency numbers and protocols, and the return procedures?
  8. Identify safety and legal requirements: Fire Extinguishers, Flares, Placards, Ships Papers, Registration, First Aid, Torch.

Daily

  1. Weather
  2. Is the tide rising or falling
  3. Life Jackets, Throwable, Horn, Ship's Radio, Handheld Radio
  4. Check engine oil, anti-freeze, alternator belt, engine drips, bilge, bilge pump.
  5. Stow loose gear below and close hatches.
  6. Set the following DC switches to on: Main, Cabin Lights, water, instruments, and VHF.
  7. Turn off the AC main.
  8. Pass up engine key, horn, and HH VHF topsides.
  9. Stow the power cord
  10. Remove mainsail cover.
  11. Flake halyards, sheets, and furling lines as needed.
  12. Key to on (do not start) record engine hours and fuel available.
  13. Confirm the battery is switched to All
  14. Center the steering wheel.
  15. Test the VHF and the chart plotter.
  16. Start the engine in neutral. Advance a little above idle to warm up in neutral.
  17. Brief the crew on the departure plan.
  18. Remove the unneeded dock lines.
  19. Sound one prolonged blast.
  20. Execute the departure plan.
